Introduction
Clifton Hill School faced the challenge of an outdated, inefficient, and costly gas heating system that no longer met the needs of the building. In response, and with a clear focus on sustainability, the school partnered with Surrey County Council to secure funding through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
This support enabled a major upgrade: the replacement of the old gas system with a cutting-edge heat pump solution that significantly cuts carbon emissions and reduces long-term running costs.
Alongside the installation of the heat pump, the project included a range of additional energy-saving improvements. These secondary measures, such as enhanced loft insulation and the integration of smart energy controls, further boosted the school’s overall energy efficiency. The result is a more comfortable and environmentally friendly learning environment for students and staff, as well as a shining example of sustainability for the wider community.
This successful transformation reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and supports the broader public sector objective of lowering carbon footprints across educational facilities. The decarbonisation of Clifton Hill School represents a meaningful step toward a greener, more energy-efficient future in education.

Heat Pump Details:
The feasibility study conducted for the building identified that a comprehensive heating and hot water solution would require the installation of two separate heat pump units. This assessment was based on a detailed analysis of the building’s size, energy demands, and the specific requirements for both heating and hot water throughout the year. The chosen Acer range models are:
From an environmental perspective, heat pumps offer a much cleaner alternative to conventional heating systems. Since they run on electricity instead of burning fossil fuels, they have the potential to operate entirely on renewable energy sources like solar or wind. This significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with heating and cooling. Additionally, as the electricity grid becomes greener, heat pumps become even more sustainable.
Plant Room Details:
To meet the schools decarbonisation plans, a commercial heat pump plant room must be designed with energy efficiency, low-carbon operation, and future scalability in mind. Key requirements include the integration of high-efficiency heat pumps powered by renewable or low-carbon electricity sources, along with appropriate thermal storage solutions to manage peak demands and optimize load shifting.
The plant room should also include advanced control systems for real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and performance optimisation. Proper insulation, zoning, and hydraulic separation are essential to ensure maximum heat recovery and minimal energy waste. Additionally, the system should be designed for compatibility with low-temperature heating distribution networks and aligned with building management systems (BMS) to ensure seamless integration and data-driven energy management.
Classroom Heating
As part of their commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, Clifton Hill School have invested in a major upgrade to the school’s heating system to help create a more comfortable and eco-friendly environment for students and staff.
Smarter Heating for Better Comfort
All classrooms are now equipped with high-performance, energy-efficient radiators designed to maintain consistent warmth while using significantly less energy. These radiators deliver reliable comfort throughout the day and help reduce our overall carbon footprint.
A Modern System from the Inside Out
Behind the scenes, we’ve replaced the old heating infrastructure with modern piping to ensure efficient heat distribution throughout the building. For added safety and durability, any pipework below 1.8m has been neatly enclosed using specialist Pendock Boxing to keeping it protected and improving the classroom aesthetic.
Better Insulation, Lower Energy Use
To further reduce heat loss and enhance energy efficiency, new loft insulation has been installed in all classrooms. This helps keep warm air in and cold air out, creating a more stable indoor climate and reducing the need for excessive heating.
These improvements not only make Clifton Hill School more energy efficient today but also support the schools long-term sustainability goals. By investing in smarter systems and greener solutions, Clifton Hill School have created a learning environment that’s better for students and better for the planet.
“CO2PEC have been great to work with, they have been very knowledgeable and professional throughout the installation of our Air Source Heat Pumps, Solar Panels and all other supporting services”
